Basic Law Enforcement Academy to be held in Salem
The Missouri Sheriffs’ Association in cooperation with the Dent County Sheriff’s Office and the City of Salem Police Department will be hosting a basic law enforcement training academy starting August 18, 2016 at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory.
The Academy will be a 700 hour course that will qualify graduates with a Class A peace officer license in Missouri. The class will meet Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6-10 pm as well as Saturdays from 8 am-5 pm and some Sundays. This is an eleven month program with a maximum of 30 students and a graduation being held in July 2017.
Sergeant Lenny Pabin, Dent County Sheriff’s Office will serve as the coordinator for this academy. “Providing this type of superior training opportunities in our local community will be a great benefit to those wishing to become a law enforcement officer,” stated Sheriff Rick Stallings.
Chief Keith Steelman explained that he is excited about the training being held locally since current police officers can attend specific sessions to reach their POST Law Enforcement Training recertification without having to travel to become recertified.
The Missouri Sheriffs’ Association Training Academy meets and exceeds the State of Missouri’s minimum basic training requirement for peace officer certification. Graduates will be certified in several areas from report writing to arrest procedures, intake booking to inmate supervision. Driving instruction courses will be held at the Salem airport and firearms training will be held at the newly completed firing range.
The Missouri Sheriffs’ Association Training Academy (MSATA) plays a vital role in the training and education of law enforcement and emergency services professionals statewide.
Those wishing to attend may register by going to the Missouri Sheriff’s Association website at www.mosheriffs.com and clicking on the training academy tab. Financial aid is available for those who qualify and more information is on the MSSA website.
The Salem Community Center @ the Armory is located at 1200 W. Rolla Road in Salem. For questions please call Sgt. Len Pabin at the Dent County Sheriff’s Office at 729-3241.

The Dent County Health Center and the Council for a Healthy Dent County Boards of Directors are pleased to announce the Council will assume management oversight of the Salem Fitness Center effective February 1, 2012.
Since the Fitness Center started it has been administered under the Dent County Health Center (DCHC). The Center’s revenues come from a combination of: member dues, class fees, and community donations.
Recently the Council for a Healthy Dent County joined the Salem TCRC partnership as managing partner. The Fitness Center represented the only other non-city related tenant in the Salem Freedom Activity Center and many benefits to the joint-operation are expected.
Several meetings were held to discuss the prospect resulting in a proposal from the Council to the Health Center for the Council to assume administrative and programmatic responsibilities for the Salem Fitness Center.
The Council for a Healthy Dent County is a non-profit 501c3 organization with the administrative and programmatic capacity to continue the role previously fulfilled by the Dent County Health Center. The Salem Fitness Center was formed in 2003 and originally operated as the Cardiovascular Wellness Program. Initial funding was from a 3-year Missouri Foundation for Health grant. The grant provided resources for equipment and limited funding for staff.
The Fitness Center and Salem TCRC programs operate out of the Salem Freedom Activity Center at 1200 W. Rolla Road in Salem Missouri. The Council will work with current staff and volunteers to continue to improve and enhance the Center for the good of the community. The transition plan includes both short-term and long-term items for implementation.
Organizations and individuals having an interest in supporting the Salem Fitness Center and/or to request additional programs and services are encouraged to contact the Center at (573) 739-1127, by email at firstname.lastname@example.org or in person at the Salem Freedom Activity Center, 1200 W. Rolla Road in Salem in the former National Guard Armory.

Salem TCRC Transition Update
October 11, 2011
MU Extension announced in November 2010 plans to end their participation in TCRC partnerships across the state by November 2011. Since the announcement Salem TCRC Executive and Management Committees have been exploring available options for the Salem TCRC to continue serving the Salem/Dent County community.
The Salem TCRC Executive Committee recently approved the addition of the Council for a Healthy Dent County (CHDC) to the Salem TCRC partnership. The Council is a non-profit 501c3 organization that resulted from Extension’s Healthy Lifestyle Initiative. After Extension’s announcement regarding TCRCs the Council expressed an interest to the Salem TCRC partners to join the partnership and to help support the administrative and programmatic role with the Salem TCRC previously fulfilled by MU Extension.
The loss of Extension and US Foodservice as Salem TCRC partners necessitated a change in Salem TCRC operations. Prior to the reorganization Salem TCRC staffing included: Ray Walden as Coordinator, Charles Pace as Information Technology Specialist, and Sherry Lea as Office Manager/Administrative Assistant. Beginning November 2011 the Salem TCRC will have one full-time staff position with Sherry Lea serving as Executive Director. Classes will be taught by Charles Pace.
The reorganized Salem TCRC plans to offer similar educational programs and technology related services including:
- Computer Training
- Credit and Non-Credit Educational Programs
- Specialized Courses (have included: GPS, Photo Editing Basics, QuickBooks, Selling on eBay, and Video Editing Using Windows Movie Maker)
- Meeting Rooms
- A/V Equipment Rental
- Video to DVD Transfer
- Public Internet and E-mail Access
- Rural Addressing for Dent County
Organizations and individuals having an interest in supporting the Salem TCRC and/or to request additional programs and services are encouraged to contact the Salem TCRC at (573) 729-8163 or to stop by in person at the Salem Freedom Activity Center, 1200 W. Rolla Road in Salem in the former National Guard Armory.
